How Laser Scanning 3D works?
The Laser Scanner works by sending an infrared beam into the center of a rotating mirror. Device is deflecting the laser around the environment. Upon contact the beam is then reflected back into the scanner and the “phase shift” of the infrared is measured. This is how we gets the distance of the laser from the object. Encoders are measuring the mirror rotation and the horizontal rotation. So the Laser Scanner is able to calculate XYZ coordinates of each point..
The main advantage of the phase shift technology is the speed of point capture during laser scanning 3d, hundreds of thousands of points points per second. The scanners also capable of recognizing the luminosity of the reflected surface. This builds a grey scale image similar to a 3D black and white photograph. The addition of the Color Option enables scans to be colorized adding to the realism of the images and in complex environments identification of specific pipes or ducts can be made easier.
